Dr. Hendranus Vermeulen is the founding member of humanit. He has a decade of research and development experience using digital media for learning in education. Prior to starting humanit, Hendranus was the Chief Multimedia Developer at Formula D Interactive. At formula-d he developed various digital media applications (online learning game, touch wall, interactive projection, etc.) with an educational focus. He also has extensive experience in programming (ActionScript and JavaScript), e-learning, learning management systems and digital education. He recently gave a presentation at the Education Week Conference entitled "Using electronic games to inform didactic practice". This presentation argued that important didactic lessons can be learned from electronic games and that these can be used to transform learning activities into interactive experience wherein learners are actively participating and engaged.

Hendranus completed his Bachelor of Social Science undergraduate degree, as well as his BSocSc (Honours) in Religious Studies and Higher Diploma in Education postgraduate degrees, at the University of Kwazulu-Natal Pietermaritzburg. He went on to complete his MSc "Education and Training Systems Design" postgraduate degree at the University of Twente in the Netherlands. Hendranus then attained his PhD from the Department of Computer Science, at the University of Cape Town with his thesis entitled “LEARNING IN A VIRTUAL WORLD: Expanding Activity theory for the design and evaluation of group praxis”.
